The System Sucks!
A few weeks ago, Michael Waltrip had the 20th best lap in qualifying at Tallladega. Now, you would have thought he made the field, right? Nope, he wasn’t in the top 35 in Owner Points, so slower cars got to race while Waltrip packed up and went home. This should prove to everyone that the qualifying system needs changed. So, here’s what I would do:
* Do away with the top 35 deal and make it the top 12 in DRIVER points that are secured with a spot in the field.
* The other 31? If they ain’t fast enough to get in the field, then they go home.
* Now, what do you do at the beginning of the year? Well, the top 20 in DRIVER points from the year before are secure for the first 4 points races of the season, no matter what team the driver is with that year.
* What about the Champ Prov? Bye-bye.

I totally agree, Robert. While I believe the system was made this way to make the sponsors happy, it sure is not fair as in Waltrip’s case. I think that I would be in favor of the Top 12 as they are good enough for the Chase, then they get the free pass and everybody else dukes it out.

I couldn’t agree more I have been banging this drum since last year..I don’t care if it’s twelve or twenty locked in positions but nobody should be rewarded for finishing 25th or worse the year before….
