Now is the time when the NASCAR Point Standings kick in for the 2008 race season. Up until now, the field has been set on qualifying day as a result of the top 35 from the 2007 season. Bristol was the fifth race of the season, so all races from here on out will use the 2008 point standings to determine the top 35 cars.

To see where the drivers stand in both the Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series (there was no Craftsman Truck race this week), keep reading after the jump.

Kyle Busch is having a great week. First, he won both the Craftsman Truck and Sprint Cup races in Atlanta, and that means he was able to increase his overall points lead in both series as well. Carl Edwards, on the other hand, is having a bad week and went from the top of the points because of a penalty, all the way down to 17th after a 42nd place finish with a blown engine in the Sprint Cup race.

Kevin Harvick managed to take the points lead in the Nationwide Series, with last year’s Busch Series Champion Carl Edwards right on his heels.

We haven’t done this in awhile! Even though the current point standings don’t count towards qualifying, it’s interesting to see where everyone is so far after a couple of races this season. The current point standings don’t officially kick in to secure the top 35 until after the fifth race.

Right now, Carl Edwards is enjoying his first time atop the Sprint Cup Point Standings Charts. However, it may not be for long because his Las Vegas winning #99 car failed post race inspection. Any penalties are expected to be announced on Wednesday and could affect the point standings dramatically.

Well, race fans, we’re down to the final race. Miami Homestead looms near and the championship is still on the line in the Nextel Cup and Craftsman Truck Series. Since the Busch Series Championship has already been decided, we’ll take this week off from listing those points. We will post the final point standings after next week’s race in Miami.

However, Hendrick Motorsports teammates Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon are still battling it out for the Nextel Cup championship, and the Craftsman Truck championship has come down to Mike Skinner and Ron Hornaday’s final race of the 2007 season.

Jimmie Johnson has taken over the lead in the Nextel Cup Point standings over his teammate Jeff Gordon. With only a few races left, the race heats up to see if Jimmie can take home the trophy again this season to make it back to back championships for the #48 team. The Busch Series championship has been decided with Carl Edwards clinching the title this past weekend in the Texas race. However, the Craftsman Truck points are still close with Mike Skinner and Ron Hornaday continuing to battle it out.

All three of NASCAR’s major series were in action this week and things are really starting to heat up in the point standings! Jeff Gordon was able to hang on to his lead in the Nextel Cup standings, but his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson closed the gap and is now within a measly nine points of the top spot after his win in Atlanta this weekend. The Craftsman Trucks are also in a tight race for the top with Mike Skinner and Ron Hornaday see-sawing every week. While the Busch Series isn’t nearly as close, Carl Edwards has been struggling lately and hasn’t been able to clinch the title as of yet.

Jimmie Johnson may have won at Martinsville, but a strong 3rd place finish by his teammate Jeff Gordon kept Johnson from taking the lead in the point standings and hung on to first place. With only four races to go in the Chase for the Championship, every point counts.

The Busch Series drivers had the weekend off, but the Craftsman Trucks battled it out and saw the points lead change hands again. It’s getting down to the wire and Mike Skinner is on top right now, but Ron Hornaday is hot on his heels.

Not much changed in the Nextel Cup point standings this week with Jeff Gordon widening his lead over Jimmie Johnson after a win at Lowe’s Motorspeedway in Charlotte, NC. With only five races left before a champion is crowned, it is becoming a three man race to the finish between Gordon, Johnson, and Clint Bowyer. Will anyone else have a chance to catch up before the end of the season?

Over on the Craftsman Truck circuit, things are still tight at the top with Ron Hornaday regaining the lead over Mike Skinner. However, only 14 points separates first and second place right now, making this the closest points race at this point in the history of the Craftsman Truck Series.

The Busch Series had the weekend off, so the point standings stay the same as last week for those drivers.

While the Busch Series took the weekend off, the Nextel Cup cars and Craftsman Trucks bump drafted their way around the Talladega Superspeedway to mixed results. Both series saw the lead flip flop in the standings this week. Jeff Gordon took back the top spot after his Talladega win from teammate Jimmie Johnson who falls to second. The lead is only 9 points, though, so it’s not even close to being over. Mike Skinner ran into some problems and gave up his lead to Ron Hornaday, who now sits atop the standings with a 14 point lead.

After the crazy race in Kansas, the Chase contenders got all mixed up in the standings. There were both big gainers and big losers this week, as the majority of the drivers in the Chase got caught up in wrecks on the slick and wet track. Carl Edwards still leads the Busch Series standings, but his enormous lead was chipped into slightly as he ended up 38th in the Busch race in Kansas. To see the current standings in both series for the top 50 drivers, continue reading after the jump. The Craftsman Trucks had the weekend off, so the standings have not changed since last week’s round up.

The Chase for the Championship heats up as the current top 4 drivers are all within 4 points of the leader, Jeff Gordon. Carl
Edwards jumps into third after his victory at Dover, just three points behind Gordon, but a points penalty may be assessed tomorrow for not passing post race inspection.

Speaking of Carl Edwards, he is still running away with the Busch Series. It’s not even much fun anymore knowing that no one will make up that almost 800 point gap before the end of the season.

The Craftsman Truck series, however, is much more exciting with Mike Skinner now leading Ron Hornaday by only 3 points. This battle is far from over and should be fun to watch play out and see who ultimately comes out on top.

The Nextel Cup top 12 standings were all shaken up after the first race of the Chase in Loudon, but the Craftsman Truck series saw little movement in their traditional points championship. The Busch Series had the week off, so the standings stayed the same. All three series’ current point standings can be found after the jump.

And the Chase Begins!

Thursday, September 13th, 2007

cuplogo.JPGThe top twelve were set after last week’s race at Richmond. Richard Childress racing is looking strong with all three of its primary cars making the chase (even though they are 10th, 11th, and 12th right now). Hendrick is strong as always with three of their four cars in and Gibbs Racing gets two of their three cars aiming for the championship. Rousch-Fenway, after having all five cars in the first year of the Chase, is disappointed again with their hopes resting on the shoulders of Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth. DEI was able to get Martin Truex, Jr. his first taste of the Chase, and Kurt Busch for Penske rounds out the field. Here are the current standings for the top twelve after factoring in wins for the season (indicated after the points total in parentheses):

1 Jimmie Johnson, 5,060 (6)
2 Jeff Gordon, 5,040 (4)
3 Tony Stewart, 5,030 (3)
4 Carl Edwards, 5,020, (2)
5 Kurt Busch, 5,020 (2)
6 Denny Hamlin, 5,010 (1)
7 Martin Truex Jr., 5,010 (1)
8 Matt Kenseth, 5,010 (1)
9 Kyle Busch, 5,010 (1)
10 Jeff Burton, 5,010 (1)
11 Kevin Harvick, 5,010 (1)
12 Clint Bowyer, 5,000 (0)

What do you think? Do you like the extra points for wins, or should they not count for more? Did your favorite driver make it into the Chase? Leave some comments below.
