Back Off, NASCAR!
I have been a NASCAR fan for almost 14 years, and I love the sport. But, the business side of NASCAR makes me sick sometimes. I don’t really care how much money NEXTEL has put in their pockets, that does not give them the right to say who teams chose to put on the hood of their cars.
On any given race day, you see commercials for both NEXTEL and AT&T. Why doesn’t NEXTEL have a problem with that? Even if Jeff Burton leads every lap of a race and goes on to victory lane, NEXTEL, being the main sponsor of the NASCAR Cup Series, will still get more air time.
Burton’s Richard Childress Racing teammate, Kevin Harvick, battled with NASCAR aswell over his main sponsor. At the beginning of the 2007 season, Shell/Pennzoil took over as the main sponsor on Harvick’s #29 Chevy. Sunoco, who is the Official Fuel of NASCAR threw a tantrum when their competitor took over the car. Things heated up even more when Harvick won the biggest race of the season, the Daytona 500.
NASCAR just needs to grow up!
